Seeing in Black & White #5

Joy
Seeing in Black & White #1

These horses were hurrying to get their treats (aka worm medicine) from their caretaker. I feel joyful everytime I see horses.

As part of our learning process, we had to turn in the original color image along with our black & white conversion for critiques. This is the color version of yesterday's post, proof that seeing in black & white improves color photographs as well!

Mother and baby alpaca

In about an hour, the cria (baby alpaca) had learned to stand up, nurse and gambol about, a very entertaining sight! It's tiny, thin legs and wobbly attempts to stand reminded me very much of a fawn.

Alpaca and newborn cria

The highlight of the day was the birth of a baby alpaca called a cria. Mother alpacas give birth during daylight, between about 10am and 2pm, on a sunny, dry day. This increases the chances of the infant surviving in the cold climate of the Andes Mountains. Given that we were on our lunch break, this was perfect timing! Here the baby is resting between attempts at standing up.

Though alpacas have been domesticated for thousands of years, they are not overly friendly with people. Crystal, a young alpaca female, was the exception. She really seemed to enjoy hanging out with all of us, especially when we had grain to share.

Alpacas are native to the Andes Mountains of South America. I thought this shot makes them appear to be high in the mountains.

On our second day we visited Black Wolf Ranch in the Mission Mountains valley where Wendy & Bret raise alpacas for their fleece, clean the fleece, have it spun into yarn, and weave and knit various clothing and other products from it.

Pigs don't sweat, so they roll around in mud puddles to keep themselves cool. "Seating like a pig" has no basis in fact!

Barnyard Safari #1

This past weekend (Oct. 1-2) I attended a workshop led by Pam Voth (Pam Voth Photography) during which we got to practice animal photography on two western Montana ranches and pretend we were on a safari. It was great fun and thanks to Pam for arranging access to these two places with such interesting creatures.
