Get it out and switch to black & white or monochrome mode. Also consider increasing the contrast settings so the blacks are darker and the whites are brighter. Then venture out and look for subjects you can frame against the sky. The clouds act like a studio backdrop and simplify the picture. Since there is also likely to be some snow on the ground, the white sky does not call attention to itself.

If you are capturing raw files, the pictures will change back to color in your raw editor. You can set the camera to record both raw and JPEG versions, so you can have a digital black and white right away.

And smartphone shooters, check your camera filters for grayscale or "noir" or similar options so you can make instant black and white images, too.

Learn more suggestions in my Introduction to Black & White Photography, beginning January 30, 2024, at the Lifelong Learning Center in Missoula, Montana. One of those is getting a sharp image at night without using flash. The trick is using a tripod and turning off the flash on purpose. The camera's exposure system then takes a longer exposure to get enough light for the picture. And having the camera attached to a tripod means the camera doesn't move, so the photo turns out crisp and clear.
Learn how to photograph more challenging subjects, including low light scenes, action shots and portraits in Beyond the Basics: Learning More About Your Digital Camera, which meets February 24, 2024, at the Lifelong Learning Center in Missoula, Montana. Register online here.

© Kathy Eyster, All Rights Reserved.

Whether you use a smartphone or a camera with interchangeable lenses, it likely has a black & white (monochrome) setting or filter. Switch your camera to b&w and wander about looking for light and dark contrast like that in these tree trunks or different textures such as the smooth snow and rough bark.
