Great Photos in Backlight

Back lighting can make for dramatic images. It creates halos of light around subjects and silhouettes of most objects. Back light also makes translucent objects like flower petals and leaves glow with their inner color.

However, back light can fool your camera's meter into giving the wrong exposure. Experiment with over exposing the image 1 or 2 stops. Too much overexposure ruins the back light drama. Too little exposure may result in a dark, dull photo. Try different settings and see what you like.

Back light illuminates the glass in the old lighthouse while the headland is in silhouette.
