The Great American Eclipse -- April 8, 2024

Composite of partial eclipse phases leading to totality
Gatesville, Texas, USA

Like many people, I traveled to experience what is likely my only total solar eclipse. This image was a new technique for me. I set up a camera on a tripod with a timer attached to take a picture every minute. I then combine some of the 100 frames using Photoshop. The sun appears small as a result of using an extremely wide-angle lens at 19mm.

The experience of totality---darkness surrounded by a 360-degree sunset effect---was amazing and brought tears to my eyes. While there won't be another total solar eclipse that crosses the US until 2044, if you have the opportunity to view one, I highly recommend it.
