When your subject is moving toward you, its distance from the camera is constantly changing. Regular auto focus settings can result in a blurred image. Using continuous auto focus (AF-C on Nikons, AI Servo on Canons) allows the camera to "predict" where the subject will be when the shutter opens and helps you get a sharp shot.
