Create a Blurred Background

Besides accurate exposure and precise focus, you can draw attention to your subject by blurring the background behind it. This also helps make a busy background less distracting. In this picture of a rodeo horse, an aperture of f/4 keeps your attention on the animal and away from the blurry cowboy in the background.
