The Space Between Things

Adult bison and calf
National Bison Range
Charlo, Montana

Negative space is not just about leaving a large portion of an image effectively "empty." It also refers to the space around and between things. The space between the bison in this photograph is fairly evenly distributed and the position of the animals forms a rough triangle. It is the space between the bison that keeps your eye moving through the picture.

Challenge yourself to think about the space between objects in your pictures, not just about the subjects themselves. Learn more about photography and composition in my online classes. Click here for more information.
