When your subject is constantly moving in front of different backgrounds, manual exposure mode can help you get consistent brightness on your subject. When the light remains constant, as it does on an overcast day, you can dial in the shutter speed, aperture and ISO you need and focus on capturing the moments instead of worrying about exposure.
