Why Learn Manual Exposure

Barracks Interior
Fort Owen State Park, Montana

Why learn manual exposure? Aren't Aperture Priority or even Program exposure mode sufficient for a decent picture? They might be under easy shooting conditions. But manual exposure becomes necessary for creating night star shots, panoramas and high dynamic range (HDR) images such as the photo presented here. In all these situations, your camera's metering system and sensor are not up to the task of capturing the information you need for these specialties. Taking charge of all three exposure controls---aperture, shutter speed and ISO---gives you the ability to fully control what the camera does. Then you can record the information you need for your best creative intentions.

There is still time to enroll in my 1-day class on Understanding the Exposure Triangle which meets Saturday, October 9, 2021, at the Lifelong Learning Center in Missoula, Montana. Click here to register.
