Part of the tradition of black and white photography from the wet darkroom is toning or tinting, black and white photographs. Sepia tone was popular in part because it was relatively easy to accomplish (though the original solution smelled terrible!). Creating a toned image with software is even easier and gives you the flexibility to choose your favorite "flavor" of sepia.
