There are several ways to safely observe the partial phases of the eclipse before and after totality. One is to look for the shadows of the partial eclipse created by light passing through small holes. It's common to see this effect through the shadows of leaves on the ground. In this case, my sister held a strainer over a blue blanket for the repeating pattern of "moons".
NASA had a volunteer team where I was viewing the eclipse. They used a mirror to reflect the sun through a lens and projected the shadow onto a sheet stretched between two stands.
