This side (or end) of the old sewing machine actually did the work. The thread passed from the posts at the top through the guides on the side and into the eye of the needle at the bottom. The fabric went under the "foot" at the bottom above the metal circle.
A light spot on the side shows where the passing thread wore away the finish. I also love the floral decoration on the front, still shiny after decades of idleness.
