Effective black & white photos depend on the contrast between bright and dark areas. With snow serving as the bright area, look for other features that are dark, such as the water in the photo above. Frame your shot to create a pleasing balance between light and dark. Make sure to expose the snow appropriately; usually a +1 setting will ensure the snow is white, not gray.
