If you've never practiced making black & white photographs, winter is a good time to start. Snow-covered scenes reduce details to broad shapes and textures, and there is little color in nature.
Set your camera or phone to capture in monochrome or black & white mode. On a digital camera this setting is found under various menu options:
- Picture Styles on Canon
- Picture Controls on Nikon
- Film Simulation on Fujifilm
- Creative Style on Sony
- Picture Mode on Olympus/OM Systems
On a smartphone look under Filters to find at least one option that records black & white images.
Then set out to compose pictures that emphasize shape, texture and contrast.
