| Getting Closer Frenchtown, Montana |
This week begins a new series in which I suggest some basic composition techniques that strengthen your pictures' impact. In most cases, these ideas apply equally to smartphone images as well as traditional camera photos.
The most basic composition technique is to get closer to your subject, fill the picture frame with the main idea, and eliminate distractions. That's what I did when photographing this vintage red pickup truck.
The first image shows the truck parked next to a van and a trailer. So I walked closer to eliminate those distractions. That's when I noticed that the steering wheel and the outside mirror were both circles. So I made a second shot. Then I saw an interesting abstract created by the reflection in the mirror and the mirror's shadow and took the final frame.
