Recording Colorful Sunrises and Sunsets

Sunrise over the Pacific Ocean
Ucluelet Peninsula, British Columbia, Canada

When digital cameras first appeared on the scene, people often were disappointed with their sunrise and sunset photos. They felt the pictures were not as vibrant and colorful as their film photos of the same subjects. A new camera setting called White Balance was reducing how much color the cameras recorded. The solution today, whether you shoot with a traditional or smartphone camera, is to change White Balance from Automatic to Daylight, usually indicated by a sun icon. Daylight white balance records the colors of sunrise and sunset just as they are, without reducing the saturation of the scene. Then change white balance back to automatic when you are finished. Otherwise, indoor pictures may have an unwanted color cast.
