Create Energy with Zoom Lenses

Using a long shutter speed with your camera on a tripod, you can zoom the lens during the exposure to create an "explosion" of lines radiating from the center of the image. This technique works very well with lights at night or colorful subjects during the day.

ISO 100, 2 seconds, f/8, 24-105mm

Experiment with zooming "out" and "in" as the results can be very different. It also helps to "test" your zoom first to see what's included at the wide end of the zoom and what's left out at the narrow end. Then you can adjust either your camera position or your starting and ending lens zoom positions to fix any problems.
