Summer is the time for county and state fairs and they usually include a carnival with lots of colorful lights on the rides. To photograph them, you need a tripod to keep the camera steady during the long night exposures and a sense of adventure. You never know what type of picture the lights will draw for you!
Keep in mind that the twilight blue of the sky makes a more pleasing backdrop for the rides than solid black. This twilight is present first in the eastern sky and later in the western sky after the sun is well below the horizon.
