Trumpeter Swans
Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge
Montana

I arrived at the parking area near one of the ponds at the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge in the late afternoon. I was just unpacking my equipment when a pair of swans flew over my head and landed on the water. I quickly mounted a telephoto lens and set the camera to continuous drive and continuous autofocus. Over the next half hour or so, I enjoyed watching the birds calmly swim around the pond in the beautiful light.

When you visit a natural area of any kind, be willing to change subject matter when the photo gods give you a gift. Here the swans are shown in their environment with the distant foothills of the Mission Mountains in the background.

We will visit the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge on our Outdoor Photography Explorations, a hybrid class taught in the field and online in Missoula, Montana. Class begins October 12, 2020. Click here to register.
