As summer turns toward August, it's time to start thinking about local and regional fairs. Many events are returning after a year of COVID shut-downs and restrictions. Fortunately, fairs offer a variety of photo opportunities outside, including my favorite, photographing carnival rides. 

The first picture in this post was taken late in the evening when there was still twilight blue light in the sky serving as a colorful backdrop to the passengers in their wheeling chairs atop the pole. Shutter speed is critical to creating different effects. Here a shutter speed of 1/125 second was enough to stop the motion of the ride. In the image below, a 4 second shutter speed turned the same ride to a colorful blur.
