Make Better Sunrise and Sunset Photos

Sunrise over Glacier National Park, Montana

You never know what the dawn skies will show when you wake up in the dark and head for your shooting location. But when Mother Nature provides a spectacular cloud display after a clearing storm, you will be ready.

Morning skies such as this one are much brighter than the foreground at your feet. One way to ensure your skies look impressive is to point your camera up and eliminate any ground that is not being lit by the sun. Here the mountains are catching the first light along with the clouds, so I did not include any land closer to the camera.

In addition, the best sunrise (or sunset) shots are often looking away from the sun in the opposite direction. Remember to turn around and see what the sun is lighting up!
