Winter Is Great for Black & White

Winter Texture
Frenchtown, Montana

Here in western Montana, our winter days are often overcast when we get stuck under an inversion cloud layer. Add to the flat light a lack color and snow cover and finding things to photograph can be a challenge.

Digital photography to the rescue! Whether you use a smartphone or a camera with interchangeable lenses, it likely has a black & white (monochrome) setting or filter. Switch your camera to b&w and wander about looking for light and dark contrast like that in these tree trunks or different textures such as the smooth snow and rough bark. These are perfect subjects for black and white photography.
