Beware Digital Zoom on Your Phone

Soccer Boy Sign
Digital Zoom
Missoula, Montana

While on a neighborhood stroll, I saw this colorful orange sign of a soccer player against a bright blue shed. The sign and shed were a distance off the road, so I used the digital zoom feature on my smartphone camera to get a tighter shot seen above.

I also took a picture using the 3x lens (no zoom) which recorded the colors better but left the soccer boy small in the photo.

By cropping the wider shot to match the digital shot, the picture has better color and sharpness.

Cropped from the 3x lens

Generally, I recommend not using digital zoom, which is what you get when you "spread" the image with your fingers on your phone's screen in order to enlarge the subject. The resulting picture is not as good as a crop from a photo taken with one of the lenses on your phone.
