| Nigel, captive Golden Eagle Kate Davis, Raptors of the Rockies University of Montana, Missoula |
I had the wonderful opportunity to see Kate Davis from Raptors of the Rockies give a presentation about her life with birds. It was held in a conference room with no windows to provide additional light. So I relied on manual exposure settings to freeze the birds when they spread their wings.
For this image I set my aperture to its widest opening of f/5.6, my ISO to its highest setting of 12,800 and managed a shutter speed of 1/400 second, just enough to stop the slowly moving wings. The high ISO setting created substantial image noise in the raw file, so I used noise reduction software to greatly reduce the problem.
Learn how to use manual exposure and raw images to your advantage in my new course Advance Your Digital Photography. Class starts September 1, 2026, at the Lifelong Learning Center in Missoula, Montana. Click here for more details and registration.
