Creating light and dark versions of a single subject lets you demonstrate how exposure creates a mood. To get the dark background, I left the lid of the scanner open during the scan. For the white background, I placed a box with a white interior over the scanner glass during the scan.
A variety of subjects from still life to portraits can be used for this idea. Portraits often require the subject to wear different clothing against a light or dark backdrop to create the effect.
You can practice this and other creative techniques in Photography Challenge 8 at the Lifelong Learning Center in Missoula, Montana. Class begins November 4, 2026, and you can register online or call the office at 406-549-8765.
