Barnyard Safari #17 Alpaca and newborn cria Black Wolf Ranch St. Ignatius, Montana |
The highlight of the day was the birth of a baby alpaca called a
cria. Mother alpacas give birth during daylight, between about 10am and 2pm, on a sunny, dry day. This increases the chances of the infant surviving in the cold climate of the Andes Mountains. Given that we were on our lunch break, this was perfect timing! Here the baby is resting between attempts at standing up.
