Lolo Pass in Winter #3

Alpine beard lichen
Lolo Pass, Montana/Idaho border

This picture of lichen hanging from the tree branches is a close-up or detail shot, the third image in my story of Lolo Pass. (See the first image here and the second photo here.) The lichen is a delicate green, making it stand out from the dark pines and bright snow. The branch it hangs from rises at an angle, causing the strands of lichen to repeat the diagonal line. And its delicate strands make it an excellent candidate for a close-up shot. The next time you visit a place (or a person or an event or...), think about telling the story using environmental, portrait and detail photos. Keeping these ideas in mind will lend variety to your visual story.
