Composition Fundamentals #2 -- Picture in the Picture

Another photo composition technique is looking for the picture "inside" the picture you just made. The sculpture called The Rock by Dave and Judy Rubin greets visitors to Ketchikan, Alaska, and honors the variety of early Alaska pioneers.

The sculpture is large and multi-sided with a cruise ship deck and the town in the background. I photographed the sculpture from many different directions and then looked for pictures of individuals. The pioneer woman on the right side of the overall view is isolated in her own portrait below.

Not all subjects or scenes present an obvious "picture in the picture" as this sculpture does. Looking for a detail or part of the scene that could also make a good photo helps you make more unique images.
