| Croft House by the Sea Skye Museum of Island Life Isle of Skye, Scotland |
When I visited the Skye Museum of Island Life in Scotland, I wanted to show what these traditional stone houses with thatched roofs looked like and where they sat above the ocean. I composed the picture so the house looked out over the water. I set the focus at the middle of the wall where the roof met the stones.
Using Aperture Priority exposure mode, I chose f/16 to ensure everything from the building to the horizon was sharp. Since I had the camera on a tripod, I used a 1/50 second shutter speed and 100 ISO. I straightened the photo slightly and added contrast using photo editing software.
Knowing that aperture controls depth of field (front to back sharpness) enabled me to choose the appropriate setting and focus point. Then I used the shutter speed and ISO to create a proper exposure.
Learn the effects of the three basic exposure controls---aperture, shutter speed, ISO---and how they affect the appearance of your picture in Getting to Know Your Digital Camera. Class meets November 14, 2026, at the Lifelong Learning Center in Missoula, Montana. Get all the details and register at this link.
